Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Why arrange a mission through Episcopal Mission Exchange?

A: EMX is rooted in the Episcopal tradition, framed in Episcopal and Anglican theology, and strengthens mission relationships engaged through the Episcopal Church.  EMX assures you of high quality preparation and mission partners with whom a relationship has been established, and helps us to provide an even flow of volunteers who are well-prepared and trained.

Q:   Why can’t I contact one of EMX’s mission partners directly and arrange my own experience?

A: Actually, you probably could, but you would forgo the support, preparation, and advocacy that EMX provides to participants at no charge.

Q: How large or small can my group be?

A: The minimum size is 5 (three youth and two unrelated adults—this is not a family outing), up to groups of 350-400.  The size of your group will inform the matching process.  It is likely that your group will be joining others who are not necessarily Episcopalians as we partner with local and community agencies.

Q: Can I rent a 15-passenger van?

A: No!  We do not advise (nor would your parish’s insurance carrier) that you use a 15-passenger van to transport youth (or adults for that matter). They have proven to be highly unstable and unsafe.  We suggest renting through local car dealerships and rental agencies for large SUVs or minivans. Our EMX staff may be able to identify local sources if you are flying.

Q: I’m excited about EMX.   Who else do I need to involve?

A: The rector, vicar, or priest-in-charge (or warden if there is no clergy in charge) needs to review the materials from this website and share it with the congregation’s leadership.  In the end, you really want as many in your congregation to support young people in mission.  EMX is not just a fun thing for youth to do over the summer—we are sending young missionaries.

Q:  How long will it take for me to raise the money?

A: We have suggested several formulas for fundraising in the EMX manual, but we believe that the leadership of the congregation should assist in fundraising or financing portions of the mission exchange. Beyond what is listed as “cost” for participating, we are asking congregations to be in relationship with a community of God’s children—including making a medium-term financial commitment to support that community above and beyond the cost of a visit.
